Gabby Sidibe is not slowing down anytime soon with her African inspired fashion sense. From Ankara prints to Afrocentric hairdos, Sidibe is redefining her style and is nailing it to a T. For the Black Women in Hollywood brunch, the Empire actress was styled by the co-founder of The Plus Bus Boutique, Marcy Guevara-Prete in a stunning blue Ankara dress by Sierra Leonean designer, Madam Wokai,. She wore her hair in a funky fro with statement beaded cornrows.
Sometime in February, the actress shared a picture of herself posing powerfully in a bright yellow ankara two piece on her Instagram page with the caption “Kingdom of Wakanda”. The plus size actress accessorized with some African inspired jewelry; her earrings had blue and gold detailing that matched her dress. Together with a black belt and gold bangles, Sidibe looked like she could have been an honored guest at T’Challa’s coronation!
The Academy and Golden Globe Awards nominee has also worn pieces from Ofuure and Grace Field designs. Both designers consider plus size women in their pieces. Sidibe has been photographed in their Ankara dresses. Gabourey had earlier this year posted a picture on her Instagram page of herself in a blue off-shoulder dress from Ofuure, which she styled with a pair of pumpum shorts from Torrid Fashion. From Grace Field, she rocked a fabulous pair of Ankara trousers.
If you want lessons on culture appropriation, particularly in relation to African inspired fashion, Gabby Sidibe is your girl. She has been able to wear African inspired dresses and hairdos and do it flawlessly.
