The ATCL Collective designers that showcased at Arise Fashion Week last month undoubtedly delivered some really creative pieces on the runway making you ask, “What really inspires designers? So we asked each designer how their collections came to life, the source of the creative direction and the inspiration that eventually leads to the outcome of each designer’s showcase. Here is what they said…
Creative directors: Ijeoma Jibunoh, Abi Ola, Funke Ola
Womenswear brand, FIA had a consistency of stripes and angles going on with their collection. They drew their inspiration from a subtle geometric perspective rising from the persistent need to pronounce flaps, angles and edges while still accentuating the feminine curves. From the description on their mood board, its clear their how the inspiration for FIA collection has been well interpreted from oustanding cuts and shapes into fine sophistication.
On being a part of the collective FIA trio had this to say: “As a brand that supports and appreciates women of all body types, we are so proud to be part about that curvy life, a collective that advocates for the inclusion of all body forms in the fashion industry”
Creative Director: Sally Julcit Bawa
With contemporary twists, artistic elements and perfectly blended cool palette of colours, Sally Bawa’s Asian inspired collection was drawn from the Orient morning sky and this can be seen in the careful detailing of the hand embroidered oriental flowers on each piece, part of what made the Sally Bawa collection true to itself.
On participating with the collection, Sally say: “There is no better time for Africans and African brands to be on the global map as now, and there is no better platform than About That Curvy Life on the Arise 2018 runway. I’m excited to be a part of this resurgence!”
Creative director: Aimanoshi Dania
Premier incubator brand, Manoshia whose fabric were sponsored by leading textile brand, The Garment Factory drew her inspiration from Osami Urle. The designs of this debut capsule were inspired by the resilient modern African woman who thrives and rises against all odds. Each outfit showed how wild, daring and unafraid Osami Urle is defying all odds and not afraid to make a real fashion statement.
“Manoshia is honored to be one of the designers under the “About that curvy life collective “. I intend to show that all plus size and curvy women do not have to feel less of a woman because of their sizes or curves they are beautiful and wonderful made. Our collection intends to boost the confidence of our ladies and push them in the right direction”
